The importance of activity - the 80 / 20 rule

We know that some form of activity / exercise is beneficial for our overall health,  and can aid in weight loss. However, it is proven that you cannot “outrun a bad diet.” A supportive nutritional lifestyle ideally goes along with an exercise program that is geared towards your needs and abilities.

As a general guideline follow the 80% nutrition, 20% exercise rule. This means that what we eat has a much bigger impact than the exercise we do. That being said, creating a caloric deficit and speeding up your metabolism through exercise, can help you be successful on your weight loss journey. Our nutritional habits will have a much greater impact on your body composition and physique than any other fitness component. The best strategy is to create a combination of exercise and healthy nutrition – this is when successful body change happens. You can change your body composition through diet alone without exercise. However it's the combination of both that provides a complete healthy package. Hence the statement “you are what you eat.”

Find a form of movement /exercise that you like – it should be enjoyable so that you are looking forward to moving your body. If we force ourselves to an activity we do not enjoy it would be hard to follow-through with it. Our intention is to assist you in finding an activity that you are able to do and that brings you joy.

Exercise does not have to be a High Intensive Interval Training (HIIT), gym workouts, long runs or bike tours, it can be as easy as going for a brisk walk, Nordic walking, swimming, Yoga, Pilates, etc.

Some ideas:

  • Find a friend to join you for brisk walks /or Nordic walking – schedule a fix day and time and put it in your schedule.
  • Go on a bike ride and explore a new area – make it exciting.
  • Put on your favorite upbeats music and dance – alone, with a partner, your kids or dog ;-)
  • Try a new activity, e.g. aerial yoga, Kickboxing, HIIT, Pilates, a new Yoga class, outdoor boot camp or join a running group
  • There are a lot of exercise videos on YouTube – even chair Yoga and other seated activities are covered, so if you are chair bound you can still move, stretch and find a movement that you enjoy.
